Chapter 6 - Religion
|
|
Below are several videos that you need to watch, especially if you do not have a good background in the beliefs of each religion. You are welcome to take notes on the videos to use on open-note quizzes in class. YOU MUST HAVE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THESE WORLD RELIGIONS - YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!
1) Even though Judaism is a small religion today, compared to Islam or Christianity, this is where you should begin your journey through the 3 religions. Both Christianity and Islam have roots in the same history as the Jews.
2) Christianity has the most followers globally of all the world religions. This video covers a little about the life of Jesus and some very basic teachings. We will discuss the different branches of Christianity and their location more in class.
3) Islam is the world's 2nd largest religion and its fastest growing religion due to the high natural increase rates of many Muslim countries. Many, maybe even most, Americans do not have a good basic understanding of Islam's history or beliefs. Here is your opportunity to educate yourself!
4) Hinduism is the world's 3rd largest religion due to the fact that it is the ethnic religion of India. Hinduism is a very old religion and is very different than all of the religions which you have reviewed so far. Know the terms polytheism, caste system and the Ganges river.
5) Buddha was a Hindu prince. Therefore, the roots of Buddhism trace back to India and Nepal, even though today it is NOT practiced much in these 2 countries. It is a main religion of East Asia and Southeast Asia (China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.)
